Thank you so much! I have been working all morning to get my camera to work with vistas and failed numerously! But thanks to you I have one less headache.

It’s a real shame that companies are being lazy with making drivers for Vista. Kind of one of those “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” moments. Thanks though, this works great!
Paul on August 13th, 2007 at 12:13 am #
Thanks Simon! I was getting quite angry at the thought of trashing my QuickCam (which works perfectly in XP and apparently now in Vista – courtesy of your instructions), for a “Vista compatible” one, when I noticed I couldn’t get a Vista driver. This is disappointing on the part of Logitech and I’ll certainly be looking around at different makes when I need to replace this cam.
Terry on August 16th, 2007 at 10:05 am #
I was just about to give up, then I found your blog. Thanks for the tip it worked great!!! Webcams are definitely one of those things you don’t really need to replace if not broken… Thanks again!

Thanks, Logitech really sucks. Thanks
Steve on August 22nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm #
Hello Simon, Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, I was about to pull out what little hair i have remaining when i came across your Blog, i have 2 older Logitech Webcams, which would not work under Vista, i very reluctantly tried out at least three other makes of webcams all of them were far inferior to my old faithful clicksmart 510 and when i say inferior i mean there is absolutely no comparison with the 510 especially for quality of picture/recordings. I tried your suggestions and “Hey Presto” works a treat!! Just goes to prove that Logitech and others are definately on the Profiteering Bandwagon as if they could not have a remedy with all their resources then i give up. Once again, Many Thanks. Steve.

Hi ,
Ronald on September 11th, 2007 at 6:01 am #
Hi Simon, I am having the same issue as you had so I was very pleased to find your blog. I encounter one issue though after following your steps. After installing the XP driver package I end up in the Drivers folder that contains two subfolders: Bin and X32. I don’t see a folder WinNew. Linking to the drivers folder won’t do the trick. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your kind help. Ronald

Steve or anyone else.. has this method worked for the Clicksmart 510? And if so, how did you mix up the quickcam software with the old xp drivers for the Clicksmart?
Thomas - Denmark on October 22nd, 2007 at 9:32 pm #
Simon…..Thanks for this hint. It works. Logitech really try to squeeze profit on this little trick. Untasteful ! I even called their supportline, their answer: “sorry mister, we recommend that you purchase a new Logitech webcam”…

Here’s a piece of advice for anyone following in my footseps. If your camera is not Vista compliant – DO NOT install V11.5 first, which is seemingly the most recent release. You must install V11.0, which you will find on the Logitec website and then only after your drivers are enabled as above, u/g to 11.5, which is the most recent release. 11.5 is not the full software – it contains tweaks and bug fixes. This was on another forum submitted by one of Logitec’s own engineers!
Lee on November 25th, 2007 at 3:31 am #
Worked great! I downloaded 11.5 and it worked fine, didn’t have to get 11 first so not sure what that last poster is talking about.

matt on March 6th, 2008 at 3:54 am #
Thank you it worked for clicksmart 510 but dunno how to start the microphone. I installed the vista driver and then installed the quickcam software 7.5 that was for clicksmart and let the computer restart by itself and lo the camera was detected.
blue baboon on March 21st, 2008 at 7:54 am #
The old drivers actually work?!? (They do very smoothly). And Logitech has the nerve to suggest I buy a newer model of one of their cameras? Without any legitimate reason. May Logitech burn in customer service hell for pulling something like this. I’ll think twice before I buy one of their products again. If you experience the same problem as Ronald (Bin and X32 folders but no WinNew folder), make sure you continue further into the installing process, until you’ve seen the files being extracted (it is not the first screen really, that was misleading me as well). I deleted the folder QuickCamWebInstall before doing this but I don’t think it is necessary. Cheers for this cool guide.
Marcio DaSilva on March 25th, 2008 at 12:10 pm #
Woohoo! I had plugged the Logitech cam, and after going to the website, I was sad. Thanks to the power of the “internets”, I found this site, and now my not so new webcam has life back into it. Thank you VERY much.

I really wished this would have worked for me. I’ve spent way too long trying to figure out how to get my webcam working after getting a new laptop – with vista on it. Dont know what I’m doing wrong, because I’ve followed the instructions as best i could and the window that pops up says: “Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.” It even recognises that its a Logitech Quickcam for notebooks….. arrrrrgh! I’ve uninstalled all the software and reinstalled and it still doesn’t want to give me love

Well done! These are the steps for the Logitech ClickSmart 420 to run with Vista (should work also for the other ClickSmart models): 1. Download & install the Vista QuickCam software from Logitech currently “QuickCam 11.0″ (see above) (maybe you have to uninstall all existing Logitech Camera Drivers/Software before following this Guide)

Well, I hate to be the only person who didn’t get Simon’s clever driver install to work, but …. I followed the directions as written. When the “first screen” of the old XP install pops up, it’s just the intro screen. If I cancel at that point, I don’t get the extracted files in the QuickCamWebInstall folder. However, if I click next it extracts files then pops up a message telling me there’s a newer Logitech version already installed and saying that I must uninstall it before installing the XP version. This is where I cancelled the install and I saw the QuickCamWebInstall folder with the Drivers and WinNew and WinAll subfolders. After pointing Windows and Device Mgr to this folder to look for drivers, Windows keeps telling me “Unable to locate driver ….”. There are drivers in the above folders, so am not sure what’s going on. Any advice? Thanks,
Bryan Evans on February 9th, 2009 at 8:41 am #
Thanks so much Simon for this workaround, and great that a still good webcam (and it is good compared to others I tried when purchasing) can be used with up-to-date PCs.
Jeannie on March 3rd, 2009 at 11:12 am #
Thank you for keeping this information up! I thought I would never be able to use my legacy webcam. I downloaded the software from Logitech and used WinRar to extract the files. I went through Device Manager and clicked on “Update driver…” I browsed to the directory and let the OS find the driver. Viola!

I follwed the steps but the latest quickcam for notebooks pro is version 11.5 and I cant find the XP version is 11.5. When I look for the drivers in the location you wrote, no folder exists with “Drivers\WinNew” what should I do?

PS I didn’t seem to have to do some of this. Some of it seem to just take care of itself. The next thing I knew it was working. So, non-techie people like me, it’s not nearly as overwhelming as it looks.

yes not compatible with vista
John Lee on August 5th, 2009 at 9:51 pm #
Should this work on a 64 vista system? I did everything listed here, and when I give the Winnew path for the updated driver I still get the message that Windows could not find a driver. So maybe this only works for 32bit Vista systems?

Hi: Awesome ideas. I am retrofitting my 4-year-old Voodoo Envy laptop with WIndows 7 32-bit Ultimate and I use the same Logitech camera with both Skype and Polycom PVX. Your approach worked fine for me as well. If you don’t want the Logitech software, you can just use the drivers as suggested in items 4 and 5 of the original post.
Dave on December 24th, 2009 at 3:56 am #
For Windows 7 32 bit, skipped installing the latest Quickcam software, as I only needed the drivers, followed the XP install instructions above. Told Windows 7 device manager to find files in C:\Program Files\Logitech\QuickCamWebInstall”, camera then worked with Microsoft Office Communicator. Yay.
DonB on December 30th, 2009 at 12:00 am #
Fantastic! I got this workaround to work with Windows 7 Home Premium too. Wonderful! The webcam works nicely now (I tested it with Skype call testing service, etc.) Being forced to buy a new one by Logitech’s lack of support for their products (and an upmarket one at the time at that!) would be sheer waste. It does not make me think well of Logitech.

Simon, thanks so much for posting that. I spent over an hour trying to figure out why my webcam wasn’t working, before I read your post. This kind of move by Logitech just makes people upset at them. They have good products, but this kind of tactic (not providing driver to use camera on Windows Vista) makes me think I’ll buy an integrated camera next time or from some other company.
